How financially responsible are you? Is relying on your credit cards to get by, yet making your payments regularly enough to think of yourself as financially responsible? Or is there more?
I’d say there’s much more involved.
Let’s take a look at that first part. Relying on credit cards to get by. What happens if you can’t meet the payments anymore? What if you lose your job? What if…?
Got a backup plan?
Even if you’re making all your payments on time, if that credit card is all that is keeping you from financial ruin you have a ways to go to become financially responsible.
You can start by getting that card paid off. This can take time and require some sacrifices, but for the sheer peace of mind it is well worth it. You may even be surprised at how much more leeway your budget has if you aren’t having to make credit cards payments.
Ooops! What was that word there? Budget?
Do you have a budget?
A budget is a great guideline to help you keep your spending habits on track. You can be precise about what you will spend each month or just have an approximate idea. But writing out a budget can help you to catch some of those little things that eat right through your money. Figure out how much you spend at Starbucks each month, for example. Is that really the way you want to use that much money?
But if not, figure out how much you can cut that habit back.
What about saving money? Everyone goes through rough times. If you don’t have savings to help, you’re back to relying on that old credit card again, and hoping you don’t max out or reach a point where you can’t even pay the minimum.
Building up some healthy savings can help you through difficult times. A couple months’ salary where you can easily use it is nice. Add in some less accessible money that will earn more interest is better yet.
Figure out what you can spare to savings, and put it there first thing when you get paid. You may be able to do this automatically. Do this for at least a year and you’ll have a nice account building up. The longer you can do it, the better.
You should also develop a filing system so that you can find all your financial paperwork anytime you need to. For most this won’t be all that often, but when you need it, it’s nice to not have to dig. A good system will save you stress and be easy to use.
Taking these basic steps will help you to gain control over your finances. There are few things as nice as knowing that you aren’t struggling every minute to make ends meet.
